Observations on Jeff Semmerling’s workshops at UIC
Jeff led two different workshops at UIC, each intended for a specialized audience of theatre students but which had a very broad appeal nonetheless. He led a workshop on Prosthetics (for make-up students and technical students) accompanied by casting and application demonstrations. Not only was his operation compact and self-contained—he brings everything that he needs--but his presentation is magical as he seems to conjure up things rather than make them. The presentational style is engaging, as he is continually dispensing information while he works. He also brought examples of finished objects for explanation, demonstration and examination.
Another workshop—the Cardboard Mask--was intended as an enhancement for all of our students, with voluntary participation. In this workshop, Jeff worked with a cardboard shape (which he has streamlined and perfected) and demonstrated modification strategies and then finishing techniques with acrylic paint. This workshop was step-by-step and hands-on. The most “materially-impaired” of our students (that is, those who don’t necessarily work well with raw materials) in this mixed group of participants were stimulated beyond their perceived limits but all participants were mesmerized in the process.
Jeff Semmerling is an enthusiastic and motivating workshop presenter. The zeal that he imparts for his craft is infectious. The participants were gently moved into action and encouraged to explore the materials to their fullest potential. Recommendation without reservations.
"Miss Donna made art come alive in my first grade classroom. She skillfully engaged my 27 students in beautiful art projects using superb classroom management. I am hopeful to have her in my classroom again in the future."

I was just writing to say thank you for the amazing workshop you orchestrated with our kids! It is something that they will remember for a long long time, and not just because they grew in confidence, flexed their creative muscles and got to have fun in a parade. It was also because of the way you talked to the kids... very few teachers have as much patience or encourage as much fun as you did. It was truly a pleasure to work with you and see how you do your thang!

Jeff Semmerling offers a superb leather mask making workshop which introduces the participants to tools, types of leathers and techniques and paints used to make carnival style masks. In two days we were able to make 4 masks beginning with a simple domino mask and progressing to an elaborate character mask. I’ve been able to teach these techniques to my students and produce some excellent masks for my universities theater productions.
Jeff has a love affair for masks and I highly recommend his workshops to all age groups. He is an excellent guest artist for university theater students, faculty as well as anyone with an enthusiasm for masks.
Jeff provided an exciting large cardboard mask making workshop for the 2005 International and Interdisciplinary Mask’s of Transformation Conference hosted at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Using recycled cardboard boxes the participants were able to create large inexpensive masks in just 1 ½ hours which then became part of a parade around the town square.
